18b Supplemental Assigned Counsel Program

Providing counsel to those who cannot afford it.

Overview

The 18b Supplemental Assigned Counsel Program coordinates with attorneys and the Courts to provide representation without charge for any individual statutorily entitled to counsel and financially unable to obtain counsel in certain proceedings in Oneida County.

In the Family Courts, these proceedings include matters concerning custody, visitation, child abuse and neglect, child support, adoption, paternity, persons in need of supervision (PINS) proceedings, and juvenile delinquency (JD) before the Oneida County Family Court, the Oneida County Surrogate's Court, and higher Appellate Courts.

In the Criminal Courts, these proceedings include criminal matters ranging from violations, misdemeanors, felonies, adolescent offenses, parole violations and appeals in the forty-two city, town, and village courts within Oneida County, the Oneida County Centralized Arraignment Part, Oneida County Court, and higher Appellate Courts.

The Assigned Counsel Program does not provide direct representation to people.  The Assigned Counsel Program reviews applications for counsel and maintains a database of private attorneys willing to accept assignments to represent indigent individuals.
