Oneida County Intergenerational Spring Clean-Up a Success Once Again
Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. announced today that 285 youth volunteers serviced the homes of more than 80 senior citizens during the Oneida County Intergenerational Spring Clean-Up this past weekend.
“The success of our annual intergenerational clean-ups are a direct result of our dedicated, committed and hardworking Oneida County youth volunteers and their mentors,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. “Our senior citizens have benefitted tremendously from this initiative and its efforts. These volunteer events continue to remind us of the good in our youth and that Oneida County is a special place to live.”
The 12th annual spring event took place April 22 & 23, 2023.
The initiative is a partnership between the Oneida County Youth Bureau and the Oneida County Office for the Aging and Continuing Care and unites youth from area colleges, school districts and youth organizations with senior citizens in order to provide general yard clean-up services, including raking and collecting leaves; sweeping porches, sidewalks and driveways and brining light refuse to the curb.
Volunteers participated from Utica University’s Alpha Phi Delta and Alpha Chi Rho fraternities and Chi Beta Sigma and Kappa Delta Phi sororities; Mohawk Valley Community College’s Educational Opportunity Program and Society of Engineering Technology Club; Boy Scout Troop 21; ICAN’s Torch Program; Clinton National Junior Honor Society and Varsity Baseball; T.R. Proctor High School’s Key Club and Young Scholars Program; Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School’s Interact Club; New Hartford Senior High School’s Varsity Baseball, Track & Field, Junior Varsity Softball and the Marchese Family; Notre Dame High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps; Camden High School Athletics and Whitesboro Middle School.
To date, 4,569 youth volunteers have helped 1,047 seniors during the annual spring clean-ups and 7,077 youth volunteers have assisted 1,303 seniors throughout the county during the fall clean-ups.
“With the outpouring of effort given by our youth and the organizations supporting their volunteer efforts, it’s obvious that our community sees the big picture,” said Youth Bureau Director Kevin Green. “Compassion for those in need, caring enough to do the work and bringing joy to others are the characteristics these youth volunteers bring to Oneida County’s senior citizen population.”
The 13th Annual Intergenerational Fall Clean-Up is scheduled for October 21 & 22, 2023 and the 13th Annual Intergenerational Spring Clean-Up is scheduled for April 20 & 21, 2024.
