Oneida County Seeks Fitness Business Information

Health Department Performing Intake for Reopening Inspections

County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. announced today that the Health Department is seeking information from all county gyms and fitness-related businesses in order to assist in their reopening under the guidelines set forth by New York State.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday that gyms and fitness centers can begin reopening on Aug. 24, if they meet the criteria mandated by the state, which includes a detailed safety plan and inspection by the county health department.

The Oneida County Health Department is in the process of amassing a database of all gyms and fitness centers in the area — including those in higher education facilities and hotels —and is seeking information from business owners so that it can verify their safety plans are in place and inspect the premises.

“I am pleased that the gyms and fitness centers of Oneida County are finally going to get the chance to get back to business,” Picente said. “The owners of these facilities have proven that the service they provide can be done safely and responsibly and we look forward to helping each one get back on their feet.”

Prior to reopening, gym and fitness business owners must:

• Have a business plan in place. A template provided by New York State is available here: https://www.governor.ny.gov/sites/governor.ny.gov/files/atoms/files/NYS_BusinessReopeningSafetyPlanTemplate.pdf
• Email the Oneida County Health Department at gymsopening@oneidacountyny.gov and send the following information:
  
  • Business name
  • Specific business type
  • Business location address
  • Owner’s name (and appropriate contact person), phone number and email address

Once all of those steps are completed, the county Health Department will perform an inspection prior to the Sept. 2, 2020 deadline set by New York State.
