Oneida County Seeks Public Input for W. Chestnut St. Corridor Study in Rome
County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. announced today that the Department of Planning is seeking public input for the Herkimer-Oneida County Transportation Council’s (HOCTC) West Chestnut Street corridor study in Rome.
“This important study will help improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the West Chestnut Street corridor, address Wood Creek flooding issues and find better ways to accommodate emergency vehicles traveling to the Rome Health campus,” Picente said. “The public’s input is vital in this process and I encourage everyone affected to take the survey and attend the March 8th meeting.”
The West Chestnut Street study is part of HOCTC’s Local Transportation Planning Assistance Program, which provides funding for local governments to prepare community-based transportation and land use plans. A study is also in-progress for the Kellogg Road corridor in the Town of New Hartford.
West Chestnut Street has been identified as a local roadway of concern due to operations, safety and accessibility issues. The study area includes West Chestnut Street from just east of the Black River Boulevard intersection to the Turin Road intersection, and continues on to the end of Merrick Road.
The study will consider all travelers, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and motorists. Existing conditions, mobility and safety needs will be identified and corridor limitations and opportunities will be evaluated. Wood Creek flooding concerns and emergency access to the Rome Health campus are also included. The study will identify potential design and operation enhancements centered on connectivity, safety and community that will enable all users to safely travel along the corridor.
A public workshop to discuss traffic and safety, placemaking, land use and active transportation and neighborhood visioning for the West Chestnut Street corridor will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on March 8, 2023 at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church located at 1807 Bedford St. in Rome. Everyone who lives, works or travels through the corridor is encouraged to attend.
